The best breakfast before Chester Races (and it's not in Chester)
Race day starts long before the first furlong. There's the outfit to finalise, the hat that won't behave, the friend who is always running ten minutes late. What you need in the middle of all that is a proper breakfast, eaten sitting down, somewhere that isn't a queue.
Our advice is simple: skip the city centre scramble and come to Tarporley.
Why Tarporley works
Tarporley sits on the road to Chester, roughly twenty-five minutes from the racecourse, so you can eat well, top up on coffee and still arrive with time to spare. It's also a proper Cheshire high street, the kind with independent shops, friendly faces and somewhere to park without a fight. You'll feel the day start properly here, rather than the usual pre-race rush.
Ginger & Pickles, Tarporley: for the sit-down breakfast
If your group wants a full breakfast, this is your spot. Think eggs from proper suppliers, good bacon, and bread baked for us rather than bought in, all served in a café that's warm, relaxed and used to a busy morning. Order a big pot of tea or a properly made coffee, and give everyone the chance to catch up before the day gets loud.
Booking ahead is a very good idea on race days, especially for groups. We'd rather you had a table waiting than a queue.
Tarporley Bakehouse: for the grab and go
Running late, or travelling light? The Bakehouse is where the pastries, loaves and sweet things come out of the oven, and the smell alone is worth the stop. Pick up a coffee and something flaky for the drive, or fill a bag with sausage rolls, cakes and bakes for the racecourse picnic. Nothing says "we've got this" like turning up with a box of good pastries.
A few tips from us
Book early for groups of four or more, and tell us if you're heading straight to the races so we can get you fed and out on time. Arrive a little earlier than you think you need to, because the good tables go first. If you're picnicking, ask us about boxes to go and we'll sort you out.
